Part of our law-firm search visibility guide. For the workflow behind this advice, see our approach to discovery research.
Begin with the client situation
The useful unit of planning is a matter a firm genuinely handles. An employment firm might start with a worker reviewing severance, an executive negotiating an exit, and an employer reviewing termination processes. These are distinct audiences, even when they share vocabulary.
Interview the people who answer intake calls. Ask what prospective clients misunderstand, what they need to know before booking, and which inquiries the firm cannot serve. Build the question set from that information. Do not use confidential client narratives in public examples.
Separate discovery from understanding
Test unbranded questions to observe discovery, and branded questions to inspect how the firm is described. Also retain ordinary Google queries. A page that helps answer a nuanced question should still communicate its purpose when reached from a conventional search result.
Record the location and jurisdiction you supplied. A Toronto office is not evidence that the firm can advise on every Canadian matter. For practices spanning jurisdictions, explain the boundaries rather than expanding claims to match every question.
Inspect the source ecosystem
Review the firm website, lawyer biographies, service pages, professional listings, and relevant publications. Record inconsistent names, inaccessible pages, unsupported claims, and missing practical information. Prioritize errors that could mislead a client before chasing additional mentions.
Google's guidance says existing SEO foundations remain relevant to its AI features. A separate set of magical AI tags is not the starting point. Ask for evidence before paying for a purported special submission mechanism.
Turn findings into a reviewable work queue
A useful task has an observed gap, a proposed change, a reason, an owner, and an approval state. 'Improve authority' is too vague. 'Add an accurate consultation process to the employment page and link the reviewing lawyer's biography' is specific enough to assess.
Start with one important page. Draft the change, verify facts with the firm, check technical implementation, and publish only after approval. Keep the earlier version or an edit log so future observations have context.
Measure without manufacturing certainty
Use a stable prompt panel and repeat observations. Keep engine and product mode separate; a Google result and an AI answer are not the same measurement. Treat failed requests, answers without business lists, and explicit non-mentions as different outcomes.
Track named mentions, source citations, description accuracy, and relevant inquiries independently. A better mention rate is not proof of more qualified clients. Record inquiry quality through an agreed process that avoids exposing sensitive case information.
A workable first month
Week one: inventory services and create a baseline. Week two: investigate the highest-priority information gaps. Week three: publish professionally reviewed improvements. Week four: repeat observations and choose the next small experiment.
This is a suggested operating cadence, not a forecast of ranking gains. Stop or revise changes that create confusion, weaken accuracy, or add maintenance burden without helping prospective clients.
Questions worth asking
Should every practice area get a page?
Only where the firm provides the service and can offer substantial, distinct information. Keep unsupported future areas out of the navigation.
What should a managing partner ask a provider?
Ask to see the measurement method, source evidence, review process, and a sample of proposed work. Ask what the provider cannot infer.
