Three labels, one client's problem
SEO usually describes improving search discovery. AEO emphasizes answers; GEO emphasizes generative experiences. Vendors use these labels differently. A managing partner should ask what will actually be reviewed, changed, measured, and maintained.
A proposal promising all three can still omit the most useful task: explaining an important practice accurately. Evaluate the work, not the number of acronyms in the scope.
Ask for evidence at the task level
For every recommendation, request the observed problem, proposed change, expected user benefit, and measurement plan. 'Add structured data' should identify which entity or page is being described and why. 'Improve authority' should name a legitimate source or factual gap.
Require professional review for legal material and an explicit publication approval step. The pressure to publish quickly should not erase the firm's responsibility for its own claims.
Build a balanced scorecard
Include technical access, description accuracy, unbranded question coverage, and useful inquiries. Keep branded questions separate because they are easier to satisfy and answer a different research question.
Ask the provider to report unchanged and negative observations too. A useful partnership improves decision-making even when a platform remains unpredictable.
Questions worth asking
Should a law firm ignore conventional SEO?
No. The useful foundations and customer journey still matter. Add AI-answer observation to the plan rather than discarding conventional search work.
